Timing Belt Problems: Skipping, Noise, Ghosting and Wear
Find the cause quickly: tension, pulleys, alignment or the wrong belt width.
Symptoms and likely causes
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| Skipped steps, layer shifts | Belt too loose; pulley set screw loose; motor current too low |
| Ghosting or ringing in prints | Belt tension uneven; worn idlers; loose pulley |
| Squeal or hum | Belt too tight; misaligned pulleys; dry idler bearing |
| Frayed edge | Pulley not aligned with the belt, or a flange rubbing the belt |
| Teeth worn or missing | Wrong pitch pulley, or the belt is at the end of its life: replace it |
Most problems come from tension, a loose pulley or misalignment, so check those before replacing parts.
